The beloved Requiem by W. A. Mozart will once again be performed at Tampere Cathedral on the evening of All Saints’ Day.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756–1791) Requiem is one of the best-known works of Western classical music and one of the most frequently performed settings of the Requiem Mass. Powerful and deeply moving, yet also consoling, the work speaks to us in the face of life’s fragility and finitude.
Mozart composed the work during the final months of his life, and it was left unfinished when he died in December 1791. It was later completed by Mozart’s assistant Franz Xaver Süssmayr (1766–1803).
For centuries, the prayers of the Requiem Mass have helped people face one of life’s greatest and most difficult realities: death. Gathering together, being present with one another and praying for the dead have offered comfort and carried people through grief. At the heart of the text are the words requies and lux – rest and light:
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
“Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.”
